Liminal spaces–when you’re about to fall asleep, when you’ve just finished crying, when you’ve made a big decision, or when you’re waiting for someone to answer the phone–are where we often have some of our most profound, contemplative or destructive thoughts. In these fleeting mental moments, we remember our past and speculate beyond our now. However, these thoughts rarely escape their liminal pocket or are given the agency to exist outside of internal monologues. growing up, down, around, seeks to create a safe space for these thoughts and feelings to actualise into open dialogues.
growing up, down, around examines mental health as an ongoing journey. One that is not linear, has different seasons, ebbs and flows, and grows with us as we get older. As we move through different stages of life we experience new and revisit old chapters of our mental health. With each change of season there is a small space between, where we are neither happy or sad, stressed or calm, overwhelmed or underwhelmed. We can simply just think–something that can be quite difficult in the midst of particular mental health experiences. This freedom of thinking allows for us to process and sift through memories of our past, understand present feelings, and speculate potential futures.
The works in this exhibition utilise language and mark making to gently ruminate and softly communicate with the viewer. Each drawing presents a stanza in a poem, guiding you and your thoughts through the space, and into a familiar yet distant textile architecture. Holding a form and tactility reminiscent of make-shift childhood pillow forts, this soft space offers a moment of reflection and ponder for the audience (and artist) to process and project their own experiences onto the speculations mapped across the walls. This site activates memories of a space once intended for play and wonder, that we can now revisit with nostalgia and reflection–thinking of where you’ve been, where you are now and where you are going (or could be).
